Game Math

Welcome to Game Math, Game Design Novice's latest wiki project. This project is being built out of highly explosive material from the original GDN game math project.

Disclaimer for the Stupid : If you are stupid, run far away. This book / wiki is written by Shawn Hartnell. As such, he has no problem explaining mathematical concepts in interesting and easy to understand terms, such as talking about how "numbers get it on", calling improper fractions "naughty", or even mentioning that hostage exchange is a form of one-to-one correspondence. Run. Run while you still can.

Game Math is both a wiki and a book. As a book, it is a course in math and how it is used in video games. As a wiki, it is a complete reference of math used in video games.

Math is an extremely useful skill in programming. Many people fear math because mental calculation takes time and most people are not very good at it. But fear not! In the context of programming, all you have to do is know the formulas and how it works. The computer will do the hard part for you.

We at Game Design Novice are fundamentally lazy when it comes to math. Here, using calculators is not cheating. It is saving time and brain power.

Types of Math

  • Arithmetic includes all those fundamental concepts that were supposedly drilled into you as a child who just wanted to play with with his Transformers. It is a humble, but extremely useful form of math.
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
